About The Song

Charlottesville, VA (March 21, 2025)—The boys of Seth Mulder & Midnight Run are at it again – but this time with a twist. Known for their high-octane traditional bluegrass, they are showing a whole new side with "Gilgarry's Glen," a heart-tugging Scottish ballad that proves these guys are more than just fast pickers. It is the second taste off their upcoming Rebel Records debut album, Coming On Strong, and it is already turning heads.

Written by Canadian fiddler and singer-songwriter J.P. Cormier, "Gilgarry's Glen" is a soulful, nostalgic number played in a Celtic style that could easily be set in Appalachia. The narrator yearns for days long past, the simpler times before progress and the growth of big cities.

"'Gilgarry's Glen' is probably my favorite track off the new album," frontman Seth Mulder states. “I fell in love with it instantly. Music should touch you deeply, and I wanted something on this album that would really reach into the listener's heart. 'Gilgarry's Glen' does exactly that—at least, it does for me. For the longest time, I couldn't make it through the song without getting a little emotional. This track stands apart from anything we've released before, yet it still carries those signature elements that make it feel authentically ours. I hope when people hear it, they feel the same connection I did from the very first listen."

Bluegrass Hall of Famer Dudley Connell, who co-produced the album, brought the song to the table. "This single and the entire Coming On Strong album have the potential to elevate Seth Mulder & Midnight Run to the next level. They are on the verge of a significant breakthrough, and this album is their catalyst."

Lyrics

'Twas a man from the Isle of Sky, they say
Came to the harsh land of glen
With his hands and his heart and the sweat of his brow
He made the land good again

Through his children the seeds of the music were passed
And the secrets of tilling the land
And the ocean nearby held a kinship so deep
Giving food up into their hands

And the folks in the cities have passed us by
Don't know how they got there and don't care why
There's a place we recall all the hardships back then
Down here in Gilgarry's Glen

Generations passed by and the coal companies came
And the younger men all moved away
Progress, they said, couldn't wait on the dead
And they wound up in early graves

Soon the highways were finished the trestles stood high
As America took up the slack
And there's many a Scot down in old Boston town
Wishing that he could only get back

And the folks in the cities have passed us by
Don't know how they got there and don't care why
There's a place we recall all the hardships back then
Down here in Gilgarry's Glen

Nowadays life is simpler; the land now is still
Now and then a few tourists stop by
And they're charmed by the fiddles whose tunes tell the tale
Of the man from the Isle of Sky

And the folks in the cities have passed us by
Don't know how they got there and don't care why
There's a place we recall all the good times back then
Down here in Gilgarry's Glen

If life came by twice, we'd all do it again
Down here in Gilgarry's Glen
