Charlottesville, VA (May 16, 2025) - Rebel Records is proud to announce the release of Coming On Strong, the much-anticipated new album from Seth Mulder & Midnight Run. The rich 12-track collection showcases the band's masterful approach to the full spectrum of bluegrass music.
Straight out of Tennessee's Smoky Mountains, Seth Mulder & Midnight Run have set a benchmark in bluegrass for tight harmonies, lightning-fast instrumentals, and a perfectly curated blend of originals and reimagined classics. Their authentic mountain sound and musical mastery have earned them an enthusiastic fan base across the entire bluegrass landscape. Coming On Strong finds them raising the bar even higher for an even wider reach.
Produced by Dudley Connell, Bluegrass Hall of Famer and founding member of the Johnson Mountain Boys, and Ken Irwin, legendary co-founder of Rounder Records (whose credits include launching the career of Alison Krauss), the album builds on the success of their breakout release, In Dreams I Go Back, which featured the 2023 SPBGMA Song of the Year, “My My My.”
“We wanted the best of the best,” Mulder says of the new album, “a balance of songs we wrote and songs we didn’t, along with some tracks that didn’t originate in the genre. It’s for bluegrass lovers who love to dig in, but also for those who love all kinds of music.”
Coming On Strong opens with the high-octane “Heartbreak Express” and moves seamlessly through a range of songs that highlight the band’s versatility and reverence for the genre. Seth’s expansive vocal range shines on the title track, while traditionalists will appreciate the album’s benediction, Don Stover’s “Old Reuben No. 1.” Elsewhere, the band breathes new life into the poignant ballad “Rider on an Orphan Train,” delivers a haunting rendition of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings’ “Rock of Ages,” and turns heads with a bold, bluegrass reimagining of Motörhead’s “1916.” The band’s current single, “Gilgarry’s Glen,” offers a Celtic-flavored ballad that appeals to folk-leaning listeners, while bassist Tyler Griffith’s original tune, “Mountain Bill,” taps into a gritty, contemporary edge that connects with today’s younger bluegrass fans.
Irwin shares, "The studio experience working with Dudley Connell on production and Jim Robeson engineering the album added extra musical depth based on many years working together on Johnson Mountain Boys recordings and others. Here's wishing everyone as much listening pleasure as we all had recording it!"
Blue Highway's Tim Stafford notes: "If someone asked me to pick a new group to watch... it would be Seth Mulder & Midnight Run. And this album would be exhibit #1."
In a world hungry for something real, Seth Mulder & Midnight Run deliver the goods with genuine, high-octane performances that leave audiences wanting more — not just preserving the legacy of the genre but actively shaping where it's going.
