How to Use AI for Mixing & Mastering Without Ruining Your Sound
The Current State of AI Mixing
Tools like iZotope’s Neutron, LANDR, and AIVA can now analyze your track and suggest EQ, compression, and mastering settings automatically.
The Problem Most Artists Run Into
AI tends to over-compress, remove too much low-end, and make everything sound overly polished and “perfect.” Your track ends up sounding like every other AI-assisted mix — safe, clean, and boring.
Where AI Actually Helps
AI is excellent at technical tasks. It can quickly identify frequency clashes, suggest smart EQ moves, and give you a solid starting point — especially when you’re not confident with mixing.
Where Humans Still Win
Only a human understands the feel and emotion of a song. A great mixer knows when to leave in imperfections, when to push the energy, and how to make the song hit emotionally — things AI still can’t fully understand.
How to Use AI the Right Way
Here’s exactly what I recommend:
Let AI give you an initial mix or master as a starting point only.
Always go in after and make your own adjustments — especially to the low end, vocals, and overall energy.
Use AI for technical cleanup, but trust your ears for the final emotional decisions.
Use Grok to help you write better prompts when telling AI what kind of mix you’re going for (example: “warm analog feel with punchy drums and intimate vocals”).
My Prediction for 2026–2028
The best sounding tracks will be hybrid mixes — where AI handles the technical heavy lifting, but a human still makes all the final creative decisions.
