Originally from Winchester, Kentucky, Brenna grew up in a vibrant, sprawling household as one of 13 siblings. Raised on a rich diet of family vocal harmonies, she picked up the banjo at the age of nine. It didn't take long for her natural talent to shine—as a teenager playing around Lexington, she found herself opening for bluegrass legends like J.D. Crowe and Bobby Osborne. Brenna later attended Berea College, where she performed with the prestigious Bluegrass Ensemble under Al White and earned the Red Foley Memorial Music Award in 2018. Proving she has just as much brilliance off the stage as on it, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (with a concentration in Biochemistry) before officially trading the lab for a life full-time on the road. The Duo Years and Solo Evolution Upon moving to Nashville, Brenna teamed up with her brother to form the critically acclaimed Theo & Brenna Band. Together, the duo spent several years touring heavily and releasing two standout albums, cementing Brenna’s reputation as an elite picker and engaging frontwoman. In October 2024, Brenna stepped into a bold new chapter with the release of her debut solo album, Dear Life. The record, which marked its milestone anniversaries to great acclaim, perfectly showcases her evolution as a songwriter. Her original music weaves old Kentuckian soil melodies with sophisticated, genre-bending undertones, earning her a massive, dedicated following on social media and a busy touring schedule across the US, Canada, and Ireland. A Demand Sideman and Collaborator When she isn't fronting her own band, Brenna is one of Nashville’s most sought-after utility musicians. Her versatility on banjo, guitar, and background vocals has led her to share the stage and tour with an incredibly diverse roster of heavy hitters, including Brennen Leigh, Della Mae, Kimberly Perry, Kashus Culpepper, and Josiah and the Bonnevilles. She has even taken her music to the international stage, performing at the historic International Festival of Carthage in Tunisia. With her boundless energy, unmistakable Kentuckian phrasing, and a free-spirited approach to songwriting, Brenna MacMillan continues to carve out a unique and unforgettable path in modern bluegrass and Americana.
