About
Jim VanCleve is widely recognized as one of the most brilliant, explosive, and influential fiddle players, producers, and session musicians of his generation. Renowned for his jaw-dropping technical precision, fiery improvisational drive, and deep emotional expression, VanCleve has spent nearly three decades shaping the modern landscape of bluegrass, country, and Americana music. As a founding member of the powerhouse acoustic ensemble Appalachian Road Show, Jim continues to serve as a vital ambassador and sonic architect for the musical traditions of the American mountains. Raised in Haywood County, North Carolina, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Jim’s old-time and bluegrass roots run incredibly deep. A child prodigy who dominated regional fiddle contests, his professional breakthrough came while still a teenager when bluegrass legend Doyle Lawson recruited him for his iconic band, Quicksilver. Shortly after, VanCleve co-founded the ground-bending supergroup Mountain Heart, spending 15 years pushing the boundaries of contemporary bluegrass. Since moving to the Nashville area, Jim has become one of the most decorated and elite session players in town, tracking on thousands of albums for a staggering roster of legends. Career Highlights & Accolades: • Grammy Award-winning session musician and Grammy-nominated solo recording artist. • Co-founder, fiddler, and vocalist for the multi-IBMA Award-winning powerhouse Appalachian Road Show. • Co-founder and 15-year anchoring force of the iconic, boundary-pushing band Mountain Heart. • Elite, first-call Nashville session master who has recorded and toured with icons including Dolly Parton, Josh Turner, Alison Krauss, Tony Rice, James Taylor, and Zach Top. • Critically acclaimed solo artist behind the masterpiece instrumental album No Apologies. Today, Jim’s effervescent joy and fiery fiddle style remain the energetic heartbeat of Appalachian Road Show, driving chart-topping albums like Jubilation and Tribulation to the top of the bluegrass charts. Whether he is blazing a trail across festival stages worldwide, producing next-generation bluegrass talent from the studio console, or crafting award-winning melodies, Jim VanCleve remains an essential torchbearer for acoustic music and a legendary favorite of The 615 Hideaway.
