About
Arthur Lee "Red" Smiley stands as one of the definitive founding titans of first-generation bluegrass music. Globally revered for his velvet-smooth, rich baritone vocals and his unmatched, rock-solid rhythm guitar work, Smiley co-anchored one of the most successful and influential duos in acoustic music history: Reno and Smiley. His impeccable timing, warm stage presence, and masterful delivery of heartfelt gospel and traditional country themes helped craft the sonic blueprint that shaped the entire genre. Born in Marshall, North Carolina, Red absorbed the traditional music of the Blue Ridge Mountains from an early age. After bravely serving in World War II—where he was severely wounded in action and lost a lung—he returned home determined to make music his life. In 1951, he joined forces with banjo pioneer Don Reno. Together with their band, the Tennessee Cut-Ups, they became absolute forces on radio, television, and the concert trail. Later in his career, he formed Red Smiley & The Bluegrass Cut-Ups, continuing to introduce classic mountain harmonies to massive new audiences until his passing in 1972. Career Highlights & Accolades: • Inducted posthumously into the prestigious Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. • Co-founder and vocalist of Reno and Smiley, recording dozens of timeless bluegrass classics like "I'm Using My Bible for a Road Map" and "Don't Let Your Sweet Love Die". • Star of the widely popular, trailblazing regional television program, The Don Reno & Red Smiley Show, in the early 1960s. • Universally considered by music historians to be one of the absolute finest, most influential rhythm guitarists to ever play bluegrass music. • Legendary live entertainer whose band famously commanded a staggering five consecutive encores while opening a show for country music giant Ray Price. Though Red Smiley left us far too soon, his legendary recordings remain the gold standard for bluegrass vocalists and rhythm guitarists all over the globe. Today, The 615 Hideaway proudly honors his monumental legacy as a true architect of the music, ensuring his deep baritone and driving rhythm continue to echo through the hearts of bluegrass fans everywhere.
