About the show
Chris Darling is a highly versatile, multidisciplinary creative and a trusted voice in the Northeastern roots music scene. Based out of Portland, Maine, Chris has a deep appreciation for the art of visual and auditory storytelling. He brings a uniquely sharp, artistic eye to his work, balancing his time as a talented 2D and 3D visual artist and photographer alongside his long-standing passion for independent radio broadcasting. Chris has spent years serving as a key programmer for WMPG 90.9 FM, the celebrated community radio station powered by the University of Southern Maine in Portland. His signature program, Us Folk, has become a beloved staple of the station's Friday morning lineup. Chris approaches the airwaves as a true curator, treating his listeners to a highly engaging morning soundscape that turns the local broadcast into a warm, tightly knit neighborhood experience. On-Air Style & Sound A Pure Community Message: True to the show's inclusive title—"Us as in 'you and me'"—Chris formats his playlists to weave profound, powerful roots and folk messages directly into the ballads, keeping regular folk completely tuned in. Acoustic and Roots Tapestry: While traditional and contemporary folk music serve as the primary engine of the show, Chris masterfully branches out into classic country, Americana, indie roots, and selective bluegrass melodies. The Fresh Track Focus: Airing every other Friday morning from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM EST, Chris treats his listeners to a heavy rotation of brand-new, post-holiday, and recently dropped independent acoustic releases. The Songwriter Spotlight: Chris is deeply dedicated to highlighting the intricate art of songwriting. He frequently opens up his microphone to welcome touring singer-songwriters, regional independent pickers, and roots music veterans into the WMPG studios for exclusive interviews and live, acoustic archive sessions.
