About the show

Donald Teplyske is a highly respected, award-winning Canadian roots music authority, journalist, and broadcaster. For over 25 years, Donald has served as a critical voice in the roots music community, extensively reviewing music for prominent national outlets like Country Standard Time and Exclaim!. His elite expertise in Canadian music history earned him a prestigious appointment to the Polaris Music Prize Jury. He also documents his deep acoustic musical knowledge on his widely read blog, Fervor Coulee. Donald originally applied for a radio slot at the University of Alberta's volunteer-powered community station in early 1984. Exactly 40 years later, in November 2024, he officially launched Fervor Coulee's Rootsicana & Bluegrass on CJSR 88.5 FM in Edmonton. The program instantly resonated with listeners, earning Donald a CRABO Award at the Canadian Radio Awards for his massive contributions to community and campus broadcasting. On-Air Style & Sound A True Acoustic Buffet: Donald breaks past generic formats by blending an immense spectrum of genres. His two-hour weekly sets include bluegrass, Old-Time, Americana, country blues, Canadiana, rockabilly, and 'Grassicana. True Canadian Pride: A core mission of the show is giving a massive platform to independent, emerging Canadian and Albertan acoustic roots artists. Deep Record Crates: Rather than relying purely on digital playlists, Donald takes pride in physically flipping records and diving deep into vintage vinyl and CDs straight from his private archival shelves. Themes with an Edge: Donald delights in structuring his weekly sets around a fun, rowdy cocktail of themes, frequently promising his audience an afternoon full of "murder, moonshine, mayhem, and maleficence".
